Who we are
LocalCrier and its town newsletters (such as The Torquay Crier) are run by Vasia Media Ltd, 483 Green Lanes, London, N13 4BS, United Kingdom ("we", "us"). Vasia Media Ltd is the controller of your personal data. For anything about your data, email hello@localcrier.co.uk.
What we collect
- Your email address and the town newsletter you signed up for.
- How you found us: the page you signed up on, the website that sent you, advert campaign tags in the link, and the advert click reference if you came from a Facebook or Instagram advert.
- Your approximate country, your IP address and your browser type, at the moment you sign up.
- A record of your consent: when you signed up and which version of our sign-up wording you saw.
- Which of our emails we've sent you, whether you opened them, which links you clicked, and whether and when you unsubscribed.
How we use it, and our legal basis
- Sending you your town newsletter, which includes local news, what's on and offers from our partners. Our legal basis is your consent, which you give when you sign up. You can withdraw it at any time by unsubscribing. Offers are always labelled as adverts. We never sell or rent your email address, and partners never receive it.
- Seeing what's useful in the newsletter. Our emails contain a tiny image and tracked links, so we can see whether you opened an email and which links you clicked. We use this to improve the newsletter, to stop sending to people who never read it, and to count clicks on partner offers. Our legal basis is your consent, which you give when you sign up. You can withdraw it by unsubscribing, or by turning off images in your email app.
- Measuring our adverts (see below). Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in knowing which adverts work, so we spend less on advertising and show our adverts to people likely to find the newsletter useful. You can object at any time.
- Keeping a record of your consent and your unsubscribe, so we can show we had permission and make sure we don't email you after you've asked us to stop. Our legal basis is our legal obligations and our legitimate interests.
- Keeping the service secure, such as blocking automated and fake sign-ups. Our legal basis is our legitimate interests.
Measuring our adverts
If you came to us from one of our Facebook or Instagram adverts, when you sign up we tell Meta (which runs Facebook and Instagram) that a sign-up happened. We send the advert click reference, your IP address and browser type, and a scrambled (hashed) version of your email address, so Meta can match the sign-up to the advert and show our adverts to people more likely to find them useful. We don't use the Meta pixel or advertising cookies on this website. If you didn't come from a Meta advert, we don't send Meta anything. Meta uses this information under its ownprivacy policy.
Cookies
This website doesn't use advertising or analytics cookies, and doesn't set cookies when you sign up. Our emails use a tracking image and tracked links, as described above. Our fonts are served from our own website rather than a third party.
Who we share it with
We use these service providers, who only handle your data on our instructions:
- Cloudflare, which hosts this website and stores our subscriber list.
- Resend, which delivers our emails.
And, for advert measurement only, Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd, as described above. We may also disclose data if the law requires it.
International transfers
Some of these providers process data outside the UK, including in the United States. Where they do, the transfer is protected by UK adequacy regulations (including the UK extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework) or by the Information Commissioner's approved international data transfer agreements and addendum.
How long we keep it
- While you're subscribed, we keep your details, including your opens and clicks, for as long as you want the newsletter.
- If you unsubscribe, we delete your details within 12 months, except your email address and the date you unsubscribed. We keep those on a do-not-email list so we never email you by mistake. If you'd rather we deleted those too, email us, but we then can't guarantee you won't be added again if your address is entered on our site.
- Meta keeps the advert measurement data it receives under its own policy.
Your rights
You have the right to see the data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw your consent at any time. You can always object to direct marketing, and the simplest way is the unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email. To use any of these rights, email hello@localcrier.co.uk. We'll reply within one month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaintor on 0303 123 1113.
Age
Our newsletters are for adults. Please don't sign up if you're under 16.
Changes
If we change this notice in a way that matters, we'll say so in the newsletter.
